The Last Of England
Ford Madox Brown

What a wonderful painting. The artist and his wife were the models and such was his devotion to realism that they had to sit out in all weathers even in snow to get it right. Brown apparently spent a month or so perfecting the ribbons on the bonnet. I love the way that you have to look very carefully to see all sorts of details including the fact that there is another person practically unseen save for one small tiny hand clasped in the woman's left hand.
